Rename Entities Button

Use the Rename entities button to reassign an existing child entity to a different parent feature (adoption).

To rename entities

1) Specify a Current Layer and Current Feature on the edit tool bar. This should be the feature that will be adopting the existing entities. If necessary first use the New Ftr button to create this feature.

2) Click the  button on the Editing Toolbar (or Ctrl-Shift-L).

3) Point the rename arrow at any line, symbol, area, label, image, or other entity and click the left mouse button.

4) Continue to select other entities the same way or click the right mouse button (or Esc key) when finished.

5) Answer Yes to the confirmation message.

Drawing a window selection:

To select multiple entities at once, draw a selection window. To do this replace step 3 above with the following:

a) Imagine a rectangle on the screen that contains all the entities to be selected.

b) Move the rename cursor to one corner of this rectangle.

c) Press and hold down the left mouse button.

d) While holding down the button move the cursor to the opposite corner of the rectangle and release the left mouse button.

For additional selection options hold down the Ctrl key while drawing the selection window. This causes the Filter Selection window to display.

Notes:

Only entities on layers that are, visible, locked, and selectable may be selected.

Label entities are simply place holders for Feature text. So by renaming a label with this tool the label will change to show the text of the new feature but keep the same insertion point, size, and angle.

As an alternative to step 1 above, users may specify the current feature by selecting it on the map (if the feature is already on the map). To do this go directly to step 2 and then before selecting any entities position the cursor over any existing entity already belonging to the new feature and click the middle mouse button. This updates the Current Feature. Then proceed to step 3.

Tool use instructions will also appear in the footer of the Think GIS window in the Instructional Bar.
