Layer Password

Assigning a password to a layer file can prevent other users from making changes to the content of that layer. This is enforced by prompting for a password whenever a user attempts to lock a layer for editing. For even more security, users also have the option of requiring the password to view a layer.

To assign or change a password to a layer

1) Open the Layer Settings Window by selecting Setup - Layer Settings

2) Select the SetPwd column for the desired layer.

3) Follow the instructions in the properties window shown to the right of the list.

Password Required to VIEW this layer - checkbox

Typically a password is used only to limit EDITING access to a layer while allowing anyone to view or query the content. By checking this box, however, a password will be required every time any user attempts to even open the layer. In other words, if they don't have the password, the layer will be removed from their map.

Notes:

Passwords can be up to 15 characters in length and are case sensitive.

If a password is not assigned to a layer or if a blank password is assigned, then user's will not be prompted for one when locking this layer.

Passwords go with the layer file as it is copied or used on other workstations.

If a users forgets the password, type "help" for additional instructions.
