Export To GPS device

Use this command, located on the Tools Menu > Import/Export Menu, to export symbols and/or lines on the map to the Garmin GPS receiver as waypoints and track log.

To export data to GPS:

1)Connect the GPS receiver to an available serial port on the computer. If the computer does not have a serial port, users may need to purchase an RS-232 to USB adapter.

2)Using the menu on the GPS receiver set the interface mode to "Garmin" Host mode.

3)From the Think GIS main menu select Tools - Import/Export - Export To GPS device - Garmin

4)Specify the port that the GPS receiver connected to. If unsure of the port try COM1.

5)Select a layer that contains the entities to export.

6)Export Lines? Answer Yes to transfer all polylines on this layer to the GPS unit. These lines will be stored on the GPS as "Track Log". Most GPS units are very limited on the number line segments they can store in their track log so users may need to experiment with how much line work a unit will hold.

7)Export Symbols? Answer Yes to transfer all symbols on this layer to the GPS unit. These symbols will be stored on the GPS unit as "Waypoints".

Notes:

Trouble Shooting suggestions: To determine what serial ports are available on the computer see "ports" section of the Windows device manager.

See Import From GPS device to transfer waypoints and track log from the GPS unit to the map.

See also GPS Setup for information about interfacing with the GPS receiver in real time.

Layers may be searched for by name in the Select Layers to Export window.
