Data Format Options

NMEA: Think GIS works with any GPS receiver that broadcasts using the NMEA format (National Marine Electronics Association). Think GIS supports any of the following NMEA sentence types:

$GPGGA, $GPGLL, $GPRMA, $GPRMC, $GNGLL, $GNGGA, $GNRMC.

Demo Mode: Demo mode simulates a GPS interface by using points on a demo layer. This requires a layer called "gps demo". Think GIS then looks for the first Polyline entity on this layer and simulates an interface by moving the vehicle from one vertex to the next every second.

USB Device: Think GIS works with Garmin USB receivers such as the Garmin 18. These devices can be plugged directly into the USB port of the laptop. USB GPS devices from other companies will have to be used with a USB to Serial port adapter using one of the NMEA formats described on this page.

NMEA 9600: Use this option if the serial port GPS receiver transmits at 9600 bits per second.

AVL Unit: This is a special option designed for users who are using the Fleet Tracking option on their mobile computer, but still want to see themselves, as if using the GPS Setup option. This allows users to make use of some of the GPS tracking functionality even though there is no direct NMEA connection to the GPS device. When AVL Unit is selected, users must also specify which ID in the fleet represents their unit. Think GIS will then draw a GPS location icon over the top of the users vehicle.
