Assigning Symbols To Features

This functionality is now obsolete and is only partially supported starting in version 4.22. The old method of assigning unique symbols to individual features has been replaced by Symbol Classification. This topic is designed to help users of the older method migrate over to the new method of symbol assigning.

Difference between old and new methods

Using the old method, users would select a symbol for each feature. Using the new Symbol Classification method, the values in one of the fields determines which symbol should be used. This works very similarly to how color coding worked.

Current support of old method

Starting in version 4.22, users can no longer setup or modify the old method of symbol assigning. Any symbols previously setup using the old method may still be viewed. Setting up the new Symbol Classification for the same layer will replace any symbol assignments made using the old method. Unchecking the "Allow assigning unique symbols per feature" checkbox on the Layer Format screen of the layer will turn off the old method.

How to change over to new method

1) Create a field: In order for Classification to work a field must be defined for the layer that will be used to determine which symbol to use. For example, to use symbols to reveal the type of structure on an address layer then a"Structure Type" field will be needed. To use different symbols to indicate the different sizes of cities on a state map, then a "Population" field will be needed.

2) Populate the field: Once this above field is created, assign it a value for each feature. In the example of the address layer above, values like "Residential", "Office", "School", "Retail" might be used.

3) Classify the symbols on this layer: Click on the symbol column for this layer in the Layer Settings Screen. Next click the "Classify" link and follow the instructions to define which field will be used to determine symbology.

4) Change symbols: When the above setup is completed, users will see a list showing all the unique values used so far in this field and each one is assigned a symbol. So far each one has the same symbol. Click in the symbol column to assign the correct symbol to each value.
