This is the base direction (usually north or south) from which the bearing angle is measured. Select "deflection" to specify a bearing relative to the previous bearing. For faster data entry simply press the first letter of the direction to select the correct value and move to the next field.

Example: Proceed North 5 degrees 12 minute 30 seconds West a distance of 120 feet.
