Click the Remove button to remove the currently selected layer from the map, then select what is to be done with it:
Yes, but keep the layer file for future use: Select this option if there is any chance that the content of the layer file may be needed again in the future. Or it may currently be used in other maps. Layer files can be later added to a map using the Add Layer button.
Yes, and DELETE the layer file also: If this was a temporary construction layer or one that will never be needed again, choose this option to delete the layer file after it is removed from the map.
