Use the draw area button to draw a boundary. After selecting this button click on three or more points on the canvas defining the perimeter of the boundary. Right click when finished. It is not necessary to re-pick the starting point at the end of the perimeter. The shape will close itself. While the symbol editor shows all line work as black and fill as red, these objects will be drawn on the map using the line color and fill color selected for the layer that the symbol is used on
