Import From Tiger File

 

 

 

This tool is considered obsolete, as the TIGER file type has been phased out. See Import From Shapefile for commonly used import method.

 

Use this command, located on the Tools Menu > Import/Export Menu, to import Tiger line files from the US Census Bureau.

 

To import tiger files:

1) From the main menu select Tools - Import/Export - Import From Tiger File

2) Browse for the Tiger file that you want to import.

3) Select a destination layer for each of the data types stored in the tiger file. You may select the same destination layer for multiple source types if necessary. Select "Do not import" if you do not want a certain source type imported. A summary of each source type is listed below. The quantity and quality of data varies greatly from county to county.

Address Ranges: Imports one feature per road segment and includes the low and high address range for the segment if one is given. The destination layer you select must contain the following fields: "street", "dir", "left zip", "right zip", "left from", "left to", "right from", and "right to".

City Boundaries: Incorporated Places

County Boundaries: County Boundaries

Ground Transportation: Pipelines, power transmission lines, etc.

Landmarks: military installations, multi household or transient quarters, custodial facilities, educational or religious institutions, transportation terminals, employment centers, towers, open spaces, etc.

Non Visible Features: typically any boundary lines not already represented by some other feature.

Physical Features: Fence, topographic feature, etc.

Roads: highways, roads, vehicular trails, etc.

Railroads: Main lines, spurs, yards, etc.

Township Boundaries: County subdivisions

Water: Naturally flowing water features, man-made channels to transport water, inland body of water, man-made body of water, seaward body of water, body of water in a man-made excavation, definition between water bodies, etc.

4) Click OK to start the import process.
