Import From DXF File

Use this command, located on the Tools Menu > Import/Export Menu, to import AutoCad DXF files.

To import a DXF file:

1)From the main menu select Tools - Import/Export - Import From DXF File

2)Select a DXF file using the file browser.

3)Specify the units used in the drawing. If unsure, select "feet".

4)If the DXF drawing is drawn to a state plane or other common coordinate system then select it from the list of projections and then proceed to step 7 below. Otherwise select "Local Coordinates" and continue with step 5.

5)Use the mouse to specify the drawing's insertion point on the map. This should be the location corresponding to the drawing's 0,0 point or any other point for which the drawing coordinates are known.

6)Enter the drawing's X and Y coordinates that correspond to the location picked in the above step. (Note: Selecting "Local Coordinates" in step 4, then the default X and Y values displayed here will be the center of the dxf drawing. In other words, accept the default values and the drawing will be centered on the point picked in step 5)

7)Select an import method:

oAdd to an existing Layer: Select this option to import the DXF drawing into a layer that already exists on the map combining it with anything that already exists on that layer. Users will next be prompted to select a layer.

oOverwrite an existing Layer: Same as above only the layer will first be erased before importing.

oCreate a new Layer: Select this option to create a new Layer for this DXF drawing. Users will next be prompted to type a descriptive name for the new layer.

8)If the DXF file contains attributed blocks then users will be prompted with the option of importing each block type into its own layer. Each block type offers the option of importing them to an existing layer, in which case users can map which attributes get copied to which existing fields, or choose to create a new layer in which case a properly formatted layer will be created to match the attributes of the block.

Notes:

All DXF content (with the exception of blocks) is imported into a single layer in Think GIS. Layer names in the DXF file become Feature names in the layer file. The first field of each Feature record is used to identify the Feature Name.

The DXF import does not import any extended data.

See the ImportDXFFileUsing command for automating multiple, complex files.
