Checking this option will mean that this field must be populated in order to add a feature. Examples would be things like Inspection Dates on a utility feature or Community in an address layer. When adding a new feature that has required fields, those fields will be noted by having the field name shown in bold print and also have an asterisk to the right of the field name.
